Planning Your Website
Your Domain Name
Your domain name is one of the first things to arrange. It should
be relevant to your business type or similar to your business
name. It is a good rule to remember that the shorter the name
the better, as it is easier for people to remember and type into
their browser as well as easier to fit in small ads in newspapers
and
the Yellow
Pages. When we meet with you, we can discuss various name
options and arrange the registration.
Email Address
Most businesses use the one email address for all their correspondence.
The standard these days is info@yourdomainname.com.au. It is
simple and easy to say info@ and easy for someone to write down.
Far easier than say bobsmithandjulie@yourdomainname.com.au. If
your office requires numerous email addresses this can be arranged
very easily. Just advise us which you require when we meet with
you.
How many pages do we need?
The first thing you need to do when putting together the information
for your website is to plan out what exactly you wish to show
or sell.
As an example a large accommodation business would consider
the following options for pages:
- main page describing who, what and where
- features of their facilities
- rates and tariffs
- things to do once there
- conference facilities
- restaurant facilities
- enquiries and bookings form
- virtual mouse through tours of facilities and surrounds
- video clips added to pages showing their premises
- location map and directions on how to get there
Smaller venues without as many services would need only:
- main page
- facilities page
- contact and location page
- enquiries and booking form
Once you have decided what you want listed you can then determine
the amount of pages you will need for your website. A good guide
for website content is that 1 web page is about the same size
as an A4 printed page. Have a look at some of your competitors
websites and see what they have done. This will give you good
ideas for your own site. When we meet we can go through all your
content and arrange it in to individual pages.
Wording for each of the pages
Once you have decided on the pages you will need, you can then
put together the appropriate wording for each page. Just remember
you do not have to write a novel. Consider what the main points
are for each page and keep it brief and simple. If you have trouble
with the wording there is no need to panic as we can do this
for you. Just give us anything you have when we meet and we will
come up with a draft.
Pictures and images on your site
Pictures tell a thousand words. A website that is just all text
is quite boring and people will tire of it very quickly. It has
been found in studies that if you have not grabbed the attention
of your visitor within the first 8 seconds, you have lost
them. Your main page needs to be eye catching and grab their
immediate
attention. It is important to provide us with images that will
be suitable for your website. If you need assistance with this
we can arrange for photos to be taken or supplied.
Logos, company colours and look
With all marketing and advertising products it is good to keep
all your material uniform. If you wish your website to follow
existing logos, and look, you will need to provide these to us.
If you do not have a logo, we can arrange to create one for you.
